You did not tell us which wire melts. This is usually caused by something drawing to high an amperage. you do want to check the starter/generator a swell as your regulator. You need at least a multimeter for that. Post an image of where this wire melts etc. with your question. That way we can see what you see. Use this guide for that. Attached image shows the charging components as well as the wiring.
